Help with long term care. What is dementia?

Dementia is a term used to describe a collection of symptoms. These symptoms include memory loss, problems reasoning and communicating and mood changes.

These changes to a person can occur when the brain is affected by certain conditions and diseases.  So dementia is basically an umbrella term for these diseases. The most common forms of dementia are Alzheimer's disease and Vascular Dementia.

Dementia mainly affects people over the age of 65 however, symptoms in anyone younger than this should not be ignored. The likelihood of developing the disease also increases with ag

All symptoms of dementia are progressive which means, over time, they will get worse. There some treatments available to control symptoms however, at this time there is no cure.

A common early sign of dementia is short term memory loss. A person may be able to remember what happened to them years ago but has a hard time remembering what they have just said or may keep asking the same question.

Everyone is different though. So this may not be an early warning sign for everyone but it is certainly one of the most common signs.

Dementia is not inevitable. Getting old does not mean that you will get dementia and also having a bad memory does not always mean you have dementia.

It is important that you get help and advice if you think that you or a loved one has dementia. You can get help by making an appointment with your GP and they may refer you to a specialist if needed.
